Could Beauty Products Be Hazardous to
Your Health?
20 February 2002 - Most
people use a variety of shampoos, moisturizers, creams and soaps
every day. After concerns that many of these products could contain
harmful chemicals, companies have started marketing "all-natural"
items. "What you're putting on your skin can go into your
bloodstream," said Prescott aesthetician Claudia Keith, owner
and founder of Suis for Face and Body, an all-natural line
of beauty products. "It can go into your tissues and it's
one area of our lives that you need to be aware of." Keith
said people need to be aware of ingredients like Sodium Lauryl
Sulfate, DEA (Diethanolamine) and Triclosan. These are common
ingredients found in a variety of beauty products and can be toxic.
"What we're literally doing is stripping the skin from its
natural lipids, cholesterol and all the things that the skin is
meant to do," Keith said. "It's our largest organ on
the body." The push for all-natural beauty products is especially
prevalent on the Internet. One web site states that certain preservatives
can act like formaldehyde and irritate the skin. It also says
Triclosan is registered as a pesticide with the Environmental
Protection Agency. Another site claims Sodium Lauryl Sulfate has
a degenerative effect on cells.
